I am probably older than most of the other reviewers here, but I read a lot of women's fiction and some romance. This is the author's debut novel and I was touched by it in many ways. I loved how she captured the language and internal dialog of a young woman finding her way.I honestly enjoyed this book and I am using the Roger Ebert way of reviewing...does the book do what it sets out to do? This is romance, not literary fiction, but not erotica either. Beth Morey creates a sweet story, romantic elements, a nice read for a commute or an afternoon relaxing. Her writer's voice is emerging, but strong and I think (aside from some editing issues others have mentioned) it is a good read and if you like a fun book with romantic elements, this is it. I look forward to reading more from this writer and seeing how her voice develops.

I want to send my edits to your CE... if you have one. A light-hearted read with some good bones but not fully developed. Perhaps the author is a hobbyist and I took a chance on a free read but such obvious formatting mistakes, grammar mistakes and odd character moments really makes me wish I was a beta reader and could have had a discussion before publication. Good bones though.
I was honestly afraid to read this book. I didn't want to give a bad review when it looked so interesting. I should have finished it earlier. I loved the honesty in the characters. I loved how they were flawed but still hopeful. The story was interesting and sweet, I didn't want to put it down. I loved how it wasn't about sex it was about love.
I really wanted to enjoy this book and to some respect I did. The story line was predictable but in a good way. I wish there was a little more weight with the relationship Derek and Ruth, just to help make it more believable. I was able to over look the very many typos present and finish the book with a smile on my face. I think this is a great free book/read. I recommend this to anyone looking for a main stream love stories with a few twists thrown in that keeps the reader wanting to know more!
I reviewed the Author.. not the Editor.
When Beth Morey invited me to read an advanced copy of The Light Between Us, I jumped at the chance. I love it when my friends take the leap and jump into self-publishing, and knowing Beth's ability to weave words together it really was a no-brainer.
What I Liked
This was an easy read. I purposefully chose to save this book until after the Story Sessions' retreat, and I'm so glad I did. It's light, romantic, and quick on the plot. If I hadn't had some work-related things I needed to do while reading the book, I probably could have finished it in one setting.
What I Loved
Ruth and Derek. Their characters were so engaging I wanted to know more. I wanted more of Ruth interacting with her girlfriends, more of the backstory of how Ruth and Derek got to be where they were, more of Derek and his friends, more of Ruth's history of writing...just more.
I also loved that this book reminded me of Serendipity in a lot of ways. Remember that movie? I loved-hated that movie because of how frustratingly realistic the missed-opportunities were for the couple. Yeah. Buckle down. This book is like that and I kinda loved it.
What I Wished For
I wanted the book to be longer–more developed. I think with development Ruth and Derek's relationship wouldn't seem so flash-in-the-pan. There's chemistry, but I needed to know more about them in order to not feel whiplash toward the end of the book.
But I mean, isn't that what love feels like sometimes?
What You Should Know
In Story Sessions we have this saying of choose yourself. It goes for a lot of things, really, but Morey did it by self-publishing this title and staking her claim within the indie author market. It's a huge risk. HUGE. She wrote a few weeks ago on her perfectly-inperfect book launch. I already had respect for this woman before she wrote about listening to her critics with a patient ear. After this post? That respect sky-rocketed. From someone who knows what it's like to be on the proverbial chopping block of book reviewers and naysayers, I love-love-love her attitude here.
We need more of her in the indie world.
This is a fast paced book. We have love at first sight and two people fighting it.
Derek was a player a ladies man and than he saw Ruth. Ruth made him change. He realized that his old lifestyle wasn't what he wanted. She made him want more. She sent him into a state where all he thought of was her. But she froze after they met and walked away. He did something silly that night and had a one night stand.
He got a chance but circumstances had her meet this moment of weakness he had and she backed away. He convinced her to give him a chance and than she misunderstood something and went off half cocked. So much so that she did what she hated him for. A one night stand. She claims to be so hurt by him and how he lied to her and yet in the next breath she is in bed with someone else. Poor Sam and Derek. They were both played. Sam because he was a genuinely nice guy he did a douchecanoe thing at the end but it was understandable. Derek because Ruth just was a hypocrite at that moment. So they get things worked out and all is going great. Suddenly something happens and Derek is filled with doubts. He is brought back to high school and felt like he didn't deserve to be wanted. He becomes harsh and says a few things that were hurtful.
He ends up gravelling and she ends up being upset. They do end up with a HEA but Ruth isn't one I enjoyed. Derek yes Ruth no. Ruth to me was controlling and just too aggravating.
Overall a nice read. It shows that a once player can fall in love and love with all he is worth.
