(3.5)

Pros
- Enjoyable even if you don't favor historical fiction
- Neat and solid writing style, made it very pleasant to follow along
- Interesting, memorable characters
- Protagonist's outward growth
- Fairly quick and easy read
- Story really picking up in the last few chapters and finishing in a surprising ending
- The eBook had short videos portraying Sophie after each chapter that added to the experience

Cons
- Mostly romance-focused
- Sophie's instant, unaccountable attraction or affection for potential love interests; seemingly falling for anyone that catches her eye
- Sophie's lack of emotional connection; she says she loves him but I don't see any substantial reason at all
- Nothing fuelled my emotional investment. There was no connection. Even when a character was dying, I wasn't feeling the heat
- Lack of depth; not enough conflict, twists, poignancy, or drive (even the "villain" should've been much worse)
- Felt a lot like watching a play on a stage; sometimes entertaining, sometimes bland
- Story not picking up until the last few chapters and finishing in a rather surprising ending

Suitable for fans of 'The Selection' by Kiera Cass

THIS

BOOK!!!

I have been very lucky to enjoy the books I have been reading lately, but this book is awesome. It is so well written that if I could, I would take sick days, burrow in my covers and read til I couldn't any longer. This book is that good!!! No joke. I am so sad I have other books to read and cannot stop to read the second one, but it has moved up the list of books I want to read, very fast.

It is based loosely on the formative years of Queen Elizabeth and what it takes to become a truly tyrannical queen. I can see how the princess, queen to be, could easily transform from a sweet, innocent girl to a merciless queen in Book One.

Sophie is instantly a great character because she is strong, smart and not afraid to take on the world to save those she loves. She is pushed into a life she is not sure she wants, but must go after to help her family. She is beautiful and skillful with weapons. She is also very kind so she makes friends fast, yet she also creates animosity because she is liked so fast. Kindness can be a weakness too. Sophie learns real fast to keep her secrets to herself. Unfortunately for her, she falls head over heels in love.

The prince is a man who she knew growing up as a child, so going to possibly marry him, may be easier than she thinks. He is however, a king, so he is spoiled and uses women to his liking.

Sophie has so many wonderful experiences at court from learning Russian to private "woman" lessons where she learns to use her wiles to seduce and conquer. She builds a trustworthy circle of friends, but this can become precarious as court is deadly because the queen will do anything to know everything that is happening.

I cannot believe how good this book was. I could see it happening while I read it and then continued to read the information left by Sherry Ficklin. Just way cool. So excited to read the second book in the series!!
This fictional tale loosely based on the life of Catherine The Great was a surprisingly really good read. It took me a little while to get into it, but then I got hooked and eagerly read through right to the amazing ending. It reminded me a little of Game of Thrones, with all the palace happenings and relationships going on, but this book was a clean read. The characters were well developed, the writing was excellent, and the storyline was interesting and full of love, duty, secret passion, royal duty, danger, murder, torture and hidden secrets. Set amongst the royal family in Imperial Russia, this book is a wonderful start to a series and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys YA historical fiction.
This novel was a quick day reading romance with delightfully unexpected plot twists. The main character is a 15 year old poor princess on a mission to woo a prince to save her family and secure alliances for her kingdom. She eventually finds love and... I won't spoil it for you, read it!Anyways, she is easy to like and the letters her and her love were sending to each other were swoon worthy. I loved the prologue and I enjoyed the protagonist's character growth. My only complaint is that she's a skilled knife thrower (a bit cliche), who had killed people, and apparently felt no remorse (she's only 15). Also, there's like short movie extras at the end of a bunch of chapters, I hated that, if I wanted to watch tv or a movie, I would. I want to read, put that stuff at the end, it took me out of the story every time I skimmed by the URL. Finally, I wish there would have been more depth to the story. It was extremely fast paced and I feel like, as a reader, I would have connected more if there had been more detail, more encounters between the characters, just MORE. Anyways. This book was awesome, put on your yoga pants, grab a cup of coffee and read. You won't be disappointed.
