I generally avoid fantasy novels, but was assured by people I trust that this one was different and well worth reading. I now heartily agree. What I most appreciated was the thorough discussion of somewhat similar faiths differing in one flavor offering convert or die as its only argument, with others (and secular alternatives) seeking Truth, rather than only victory. This has obvious relevance to our own world, as does the idea of one culture being briefly so powerful and advanced that it feels able to ignore threats better not ignored.

Elantris Brandon Sanderson 9780765350374 Books Reviews

I am a huge Sanderson fan, have been reading many of his books and wanted to see what his original work was like. It was a fun book and I can see the roots of his later work but this book was cliche at times and could drag along more than was necessary, some small details seemed superfluous to the story and added length to the book that threw off the pacing. Anyhow, I still certainly enjoyed the book and recommend it to Sanderson fans out there.
The story ideas were good. So was the character development. You can tell this is an early novel of his. It feels like too much was being crammed in and there were situations that didn't need to be there. The king's criminal activity was unnecessary to further the plot. There was a major plot element that didn't get mentioned early in the story that were revealed as the answer much later in the story regarding why the Aeons stopped working and the reason. The story seemed unnecessarily long. But overall I finished it and I did enjoy it.
I really had a hard time getting into this book. It was very slow and the main character was more of a politician. In fact the book was more political than magical. Of course at the end the last 1/4 of the book was good but it was a bit of a yawn getting there. I feel like there was a lot left unresolved as well but perhaps the Emperor Soul will address them. I did read the Mistborn trilogy and have to say that the first book was excellent....... I loved Kelsier and everything about the first book. The second book was only good at the end and the third book was good but I would have had it end differently. There are definitely similarities between this book and the Mistborn books. Still this was a long book and in the end just okay. I had expected more magic.
I adore this book and all of Brandon Sanderson's work. This is however, my favorite of his. He had me from the opening words.
"Prince Raoden of Arelon awoke early that morning, completely unaware that he had been damned for all eternity."
I mean really, how can you put the book down when it starts like that?
Full of interesting characters, an intriguing world filled with magic and surprises that abound!
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good story.
Writing this review makes me want to go read it again right now.
Great book and a great introduction to Brandon Sanderson. Excellent personal story arcs and a great overall arc and resolution. Perhaps not as polished as his later works, but it is also his first published work. The new maps in the 10th Anniversary Edition are excellent (created by Isaac Stewart who provides illustrations and maps for all of Sanderson's current work).
Sanderson has 4 epic works (5 if you count his portion of Wheel of Time), a couple of short novels, stories and novellas. Of the 4 epic works (excluding Wheel of Time, which I havent read), you have the Mistborn series, and the first volume of the Way of Kings series. You then have Elantris and Warbreaker, substantial full length stand-alone novels.

These 4 epic works have a fundamental difference -- Mistborn and Way of Kings have turbo-charged action fueled by the magic system. Some criticize the action as over the top/video game style action and think the heroes are over-powered or in god mode, while others think the magic systems are excellent, and support the pulse-pounding action very well. Warbreaker and Elantris are different. There is that same level of creativity and imagination, but the action is more subdued. So if you are specifically looking for high octane action, look somewhere else.

What you get here is a very creative and highly original story, likeable characters and reasonable doses of action, all rendered in Sanderson's simple and tightly written style. The level of complexity to the characters is not terribly high, but they are likeable. Moreover, while there isnt a lot of high octane action, there is enough lower key action, and the story moves very well. The story also has a certain charm to it, perhaps due to its originality and creativity. There are also a few weaker aspects to the plotting, such as the romance, but overall the plot is good enough to support the original ideas.

The reader understands essentially immediately that the hero will eventually figure out how to restore Elantris and its people to their god-like level of power, and that this will come just in the nick of time to save the day from an expected invasion. No mystery there. Nonetheless, the journey to get to that point is relatively compelling due to the creativity of the world and pacing of the book.

Verdict This is an easy recommendation if you like Sanderson's other books, and are OK with somewhat more subdued action than found in Mistborn or Way of Kings. If you require deap and fully believable characters, Sanderson may not be your thing, and that is true of this book as well, but if you value creativity and atmosphere, Elantris delivers.
This is a great start to a new series. I found myself mostly captivated by every character. I am often not a huge fan of novels that switch perspective a lot. For one, it takes a lot longer for me to get invested in an individuals story when it's interspersed with 3 other individual stories. I understand why an author would choose to do this, and I must say Sanderson does it masterfully. I njoyed each story individually. Great job. Another reason I tend to hate this style is I usually end up favoring one character more and have little motivation to read the others. While this occationally happened when the previous chapter left on. Big cliff hanger, I still felt motivated to read the other stories as well.
